Forget the old way

Dental science and technology have been burning the midnight oil over the past decades to find better solutions to our everyday misaligned teeth, dental problems. It’s unfortunate that a combination of genetics and our own fault, perhaps sucking a thumb when younger, could have left you with a dental problem. In years gone by you would have had to wear an uncomfortable steel brace which would have worked but may have been embarrassing. Now there are a number of braces and aligners available that we can use to correct specific conditions.

The advent of the aligner

Dental braces have come on in leaps and bounds and can even be placed behind the teeth. They are also now far more comfortable to wear and far less conspicuous than they were in the past. Now however there is a new device called an aligner which is worn in the same way as a gum shield. This device works by using a series of trays that gradually ease your teeth into the desired location. This is a different method to the way that braces worked before where a series of blocks wires and bands are used requiring regular adjustment.

Invisalign aligners

Invisalign is a brand of aligner which has been developed using the most up to date software to ensure that every aligner is perfectly calculated to achieve the desired result. The Dentist will scan your entire mouth with an iTero scanner which allows them to provide you with an image of what your smile will look like even before we start treatment. This same software allows us to send all your relevant information to a laboratory where the requisite number of trays is created, each with its own specific orientation. Once we have received the trays, we will fit the first tray over your teeth and we will ensure that it fits according to the computer-generated information. You must wear each tray for a minimum of 22 hours each day removing them only to brush and floss your teeth and to eat and drink. 

Your condition determines the timeline

No two people are the same and the duration of the treatment depends on the severity of your misalignment, this can be anywhere from six months to a year. You will be required to visit our surgery every three weeks or so to allow us to assess your progress and when ready to fit a new tray. Once your teeth are in the correct position we will fit a final aligner which will ensure that your teeth settle into their new position.
